Noon came and went without a peep on the news about them. Samantha was just finishing the dishes.

“Well, that’s almost another day without being called a ‘person of interest.’

Ben swept her hair over her shoulder and kissed the back of her neck. “You’re a person of interest to me.”

She turned in his arms. “I like that a lot better.”

Ben laced his fingers behind her back and wouldn’t let her go. “Well, you interesting person, off to your nest. I’ll plan a nice dinner while you read.”

“I actually may finish it this afternoon, if I can ever break free.” Samantha pretended to struggle out of his grasp.

At the bedroom door, she turned. “You know, it occurs to me that if I turn myself in tomorrow, this could be our last evening here together for a while.”

Ben marched over to her. “You’re not turning yourself in, Sam. We’re going in to bring them evidence to help them find the real killer. Let’s think positively about this. Everything is going to work out just fine, you’ll see.” Ben scooped her up in his arms, swung her around and through the doorway, dropping her unceremoniously onto the bed. “Here’s your book, get lost in it.” Samantha slid her feet under the comforter and he tucked it around her legs.

She twittered like a schoolgirl. “Whatever you say.”

“You got it.” He kissed her forehead and winked as he turned to leave.

“Ben, are you okay? I mean, about this morning? Are we good?”

“Yes, I’m fine. We both are. It’s all good.”

But it wasn’t. As he walked into the kitchen, Ben’s facade collapsed. His face contorted in anguish. Gripping the edge of the counter, he hung his head. Secrets. He had made Samantha reveal hers, knowing he was not being totally truthful himself. Would she have been safer in a jail cell than she had been here with him? Could he protect her? The thought of Samantha being hunted by these predatory animals tormented him. It was more than he could bear. He struggled to keep it together as he tried in vain to banish the image of her lifeless body from his head. She was the most important thing in his life now, and if anything should happen to her . . . He didn’t want to imagine. Preparing this meal for Samantha would be just the distraction he needed.
